We have been in a sub-zero temperature lately and it got me thinking how are you lovely, brave winter brides are going to enjoy the best day of your life? Knit-n-jules came to mind. Julie Schuett has been hand-crafting the most beautiful, full-on warmth shawls just for you on your most special day. I had the honor of trying one on myself and let me tell you, it is so worth it. If you value a good quality handmade with materials that are natural (which I especially love about her), you will find yourself looking the best and beautiful, exactly like you have planned!
-How did the company start?
KnitNJules started when my love of handknitting found that a strong trend for bridal dresses was strapless dresses in the Fall of 2004. I have a dear friend who plays flute for weddings and she suggested that I knit up some unique shawls and wraps and present them to the local bridal store in our area. Minnesota brides needed warmth and style to complete their wedding attire. I have been in business for ten years knitting and creating warmth and beauty for many brides and their bridal party.
– What made you want to work/start the company?
I went and met with Amy Jane at Amy Jane’s bridal and she loved the idea of making up some elegant and soft pieces. She had me design up three for the upcoming fashion show that fall. I made a pleated wrap in natural boucle’ that the fibers had come from a local farm in Wisconsin, and a wraparound piece with satin ribbon, and a chevron caplet that had reds and vibrant colors of fall. It was amazing to be sitting in the audience at the Minneapolis convention center and see the elegant wraps on the runway.
– What does the company do (if anything) to be “green?
As KnitNJules grew I started to need a larger yarn source than the one that I had been using from a local farm. The lady there hand dyed the yarn for me and could not come up with the amount I was beginning to need. I found on a global scale a company, Be Sweet, out of South Africa where the fibers were amazing in touch, and the ladies were part of a fair trade/job creation program. They also made the yarn in up to sixty colors giving more accessible options in color to work from. This boucle’ fiber is gently shaved off the goat and spun in a way to put a soft curl in it to pocket ones body heat and give warm comfort.
– What do you feel is the company’s greatest accomplishment?
As a company I am able to keep not only the ladies in the job creation busy and supporting their local school, but when large wedding party orders come, a local team of knitters work with KnitNJules and we were able to put together thirteen wraps for a celebrity wedding in less than eight weeks. I feel my greatest accomplishment is that I am raising six children and am able to take my knitting wherever they need me to be. I am happily knitting amazing fibers all over town!
– Tell me about a typical event (what you do, how you get ready, etc.)
When a bride has her dress chosen I will meet with her and have her try different styles and colors of wraps on with the dress. A KnitnJules garment is very versatile and can be worn after the wedding over and over. I measure the bride getting just the right fit so the hand-knit item will fit in a custom manner. I then have the wraps mailed or the bride stops by my home studio and picks up the items that are in hat boxes that are labeled ready for easy storage and a safe place to keep them when not being worn.
– Do you have a favorite event that you have done?
My favorite wedding that I have worked on the bride has asked me not to reveal her name, yet I got to take snips of lace from a local celebrities bride’s dress after being altered and placed them on the pleated wraps I knit for her flower girls. You can see pictures of the flower girl wraps on my Facebook page, KnitnJules Custom Knitwear. I love creating and customizing in ways that fit an individual’s dreams.
– What are the trends you are noticing for 2015-2016?
The trend that I have noticed for 2015-2016 is fun, keeping the wedding look personal. The personal touch can be as simple as cheese cake in mint for their wedding cake, because when they first kissed she had just given him a mint and they just love cheese cake. Perhaps all the groomsmen wearing socks that have ores on them, and the bride is into crew. Brides dresses are in color, golds, pinks, and trims of camo. Personal touch in venue, can be various from a bandshell to a friends backyard, saving the couples funds for a more memorable honeymoon. The binds of tradition have been cut and weddings vary as much as the individuals getting married in this upcoming season.
– What is your company’s plan for the future?
My plans for the future is to have wraps that are able to be rented, “Borrowed by Jules” They will be available in three sizes, and have color choice of natural, black, taupe, and of course blue for something blue. This way a bride and her party can all wear them on the occasion and mail them back in the package that comes with upon renting. I am thrilled to keep knitting and passing all the warmth and love I can send to you on your special occasion! Warmly, Jules
Cheers to warm and beautiful you!
